Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

  • A credit union is a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution organized to promote thrift and provide credit to members. It is member-owned and controlled by a board of directors elected by the membership. The board serves on a volunteer basis and may hire a management team to run the credit union. The board also establishes and revises policy, sets dividend and loan rates, and directs certain operations. As a result, members are provided with a safe, convenient place to save and borrow at reasonable rates.

  • The first credit union cooperatives started in Germany over a century ago. Today, credit unions are found everywhere in the world. The credit union movement started in the U.S. in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1909 with the St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association, a church-affiliated credit union. Today, one in every three Americans is a credit union member.

  • Yes. NCUA insures up to $250,000.00 per depositor, per institution, per ownership category. Learn more about How Your Accounts are Federally Insured.

    • The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is an independent agency of the U.S. government that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions.

    • The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) is operated and managed by NCUA, and backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. The NCUSIF insures the accounts of millions of account holders in all federal credit unions

    • NCUSIF provides all members of federally insured credit unions with $250,000.00 in coverage for their single ownership accounts. Additional share insurance coverage is possible.

If you would like to know how share insurance rules apply to your share accounts, what’s insured and what portion (if any) exceeds coverage limits, use NCUA’s Share Insurance Estimator.

  • Most financial institutions are owned by stockholders, who own a part of the institution and intend on making money from their investment. A credit union doesn’t operate in that manner. Rather, each credit union member owns one “share” of the organization. The user of credit union services is also an owner, and is entitled to vote on important issues, such as the election of member representatives to serve on the board of directors.

  • The primary purpose of furthering the credit union’s goal of service is to encourage members to save money and to offer loans to members. In fact, credit unions have traditionally made loans to people of ordinary means. Credit unions can charge lower rates for loans as well as pay higher dividends on savings because they are nonprofit cooperatives. Rather than paying profits to stockholders, credit unions return earnings to members in the form of dividends or improved services.

  • A credit union exists to serve a specific group of people, such as a group of employees or the members of a professional or religious group. This is called a “field of membership.” The field of membership may include where they live, where they work, or their membership in a social or economic group.

MCWV’s field of membership includes all who live, work, worship, volunteer, or attend school and businesses or other legal entities in Kanawha County, WV, and their family members.

  • If you use your debit card as credit, an authorization hold may appear until the transaction posts. If you use your debit card as debit with your PIN, the transaction will post immediately.

It is best to run your debit card as credit as this allows chargeback rights on the transaction, whereas pin-based debit transactions may not be disputed. If you have any questions, please call the credit union at (304) 346-5242 or Toll-Free (800) 526-5242.

  • Sometimes when a debit card is used at a gas pump, it can cause what we call a “gas hold”. Some gas stations have their own preset authorization limits of what is allowed to be used when purchasing gas at their gas pumps. When the card is swiped at a gas pump, the gas station’s gas hold shows as a pending transaction. The gas hold amount varies, but is often $150.00 or can even be what is left as available in your account. If you do not have the gas hold amount available in your account that the gas station requires, the transaction may be denied. If the gas hold is successfully placed, it may last a matter of minutes or until the actual purchase posts to your account. To avoid gas holds, prepay with your debit card inside the gas station prior to pumping.
